Spectacular dams in Kaprun

Spectacular dams in Kaprun

The dams consist of two reservoirs: the lower Wasserfallboden and the upper Mooserboden. Surrounded by picturesque and wild Alpine peaks, these high-mountain reservoirs are one of the most beautiful attractions in our area. The upper lake is situated at an altitude of 2,036 metres above sea level and holds 84.9 million cubic metres of water. The reservoir lakes are mainly fed by meltwater from the surrounding glaciers.

On the Mooserboden reservoir, there are two dams and a power plant. Water flows from here to the Wasserfallboden reservoir (1,672 m above sea level), after which it is pumped back up to further increase the amount of electricity generated. The Kaprun (Tauernkraftwerk) power plant is the first one built by Verbund - today Austria's leading power corporation.

The dam (photos on the left) with a height of 237m can be crossed with a stroll of about 45 minutes. For the adventurous, there's an option to climb the dam face via via ferratas and more - information available on site. At the top, there are many walking paths and hiking trails, as well as numerous restaurants and mountain shelters offering full catering.

Access to the dams is exclusively by internal shuttle bus. The bus departing from the Alpenhaus Kesselfall (in Kaprun) goes over the Klamro reservoir, up to the level of the Lärchwand cable car. From there, you change to a funicular railway (photo on the right) - the only one of its kind in Europe, which covers a height of 431m. The final stretch to the upper Mooserboden reservoir is travelled again by bus.

The diagram of the Kaprun hydroelectric power station, connected to dams. The power stations can be visited in Kaprun, where machines and turbines are exhibited and the entire technological process of energy production is shown. The exhibition is located in Kaprun near Sigmuntklamm (opposite the transformers).
Distance from the guesthouse 25 km, half-day trip, on the way back you can visit Sigmuntklamm - see further, the price is approx. €22 for adults, children approx. €13

Getting there: Pension lmbachhorn-Bruck- Zell am See-Kaprun - drive straight (do not turn off to Kaprun centre) until the end of the asphalt road, at the end of which there is a car park and a bus stop for buses going to the dams.
